Two Middle East mothers are sitting in a cafe
\nchatting over a plate of tabouli and a pint of
\ngoat’s milk. <\/p>\n
The older of the two pulls a small folder out of
\nher handbag and starts flipping through photos.
\nThey start reminiscing. <\/p>\n
“This is my oldest son, Mujibar. He would have
\nbeen 24 years old now.”<\/p>\n
“Yes, I remember him as a baby,” says the other
\nmother cheerfully. <\/p>\n
“He’s a martyr now, though,” the mother confides. <\/p>\n
“Oh, so sad, dear…” says the other. <\/p>\n
“And this is my second son, Khalid. He would have
\nbeen 21.” <\/p>\n
“Oh, I remember him,” says the other happily.
\n“He had such curly hair when he was born.”<\/p>\n
“He’s a martyr too…” says the mother quietly. <\/p>\n
“Oh, gracious me…” says the other. <\/p>\n
“And this is my third son, my baby. My beautiful
\nAhmed. He would have been 18,” she whispers. <\/p>\n
“Yes,” says the friend enthusiastically, “I
\nremember when he first started school…” <\/p>\n
“He’s a martyr also,” says the mother, with tears
\nin her eyes. <\/p>\n
After a pause and a deep sigh, the second Muslim
\nmother looks wistfully at the photographs and,
\nsearching for the right words, says . . . <\/p>\n
