{"id":318,"date":"2014-05-28T22:08:01","date_gmt":"2014-05-29T04:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.barleyservices.biz\/wordpress\/?p=318"},"modified":"2017-06-13T20:12:06","modified_gmt":"2017-06-14T02:12:06","slug":"the-water-line-insurance-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.barleyservices.biz\/wordpress\/?p=318","title":{"rendered":"The Water Line Insurance Scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This scam has been circulating in Memphis for a while.\u00a0 Today I got another postcard in the mail, advertising it.\u00a0 Customers have asked me about it.<\/p>\n<p>The ad begins with the polysyllabic trigger word <strong>failing infrastructure<\/strong>, as though America is crumbling from the shorelines inward.\u00a0 All they&#8217;re referring to is the fact that your plumbing might break, duh!\u00a0 Even people who voted wrong in the last presidential election probably know that already.\u00a0 You can figure it out by studying the trucks that go around in your city.\u00a0 Do you see any with decals indicating that the driver is a plumber?\u00a0 Well, just a little higher-level thinking will tip you off that he probably makes his living fixing broken plumbing.\u00a0 It happens.<\/p>\n<p>Next revelation: repairs cost money.\u00a0 I will just leave it at that.<\/p>\n<p>Punchline: these postcard-mailing bloodsuckers will sell you an insurance policy that says they will cover the cost of the repair or replacement if your water service line has an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>As with all insurance, the question is &#8220;What are the odds?&#8221;\u00a0 Quite obviously, the company cannot make money unless the odds are in their favor.\u00a0 In this case, however, the game is rigged; it isn&#8217;t even fair.\u00a0 The odds of anybody needing this coverage are pathetically small.\u00a0 Your water line is fine!\u00a0 Save your $60\/year in a jar somewhere for when you really need a plumber.<\/p>\n<p>This company, by the way, is just one more home warranty provider and the water line scare is a low-cost gateway for them to upsell you later.\u00a0 I mean, if you&#8217;re going to cover your water line, then why would you leave your air conditioning system at risk?\u00a0 And your indoor plumbing and drains?\u00a0 And your appliances?\u00a0 And your computer?\u00a0 And . . . and . . . and . . . .<\/p>\n<p>Home warranties are a bad deal.\u00a0 They&#8217;re overpriced and usually the service techs they use leave a lot to be desired.\u00a0 Many customers have told me of their bad experiences with home warranty companies.\u00a0 Yes, sometimes they&#8217;re a godsend and sometimes people hit a jackpot at the casino.\u00a0 I recommend neither.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This scam has been circulating in Memphis for a while.\u00a0 Today I got another postcard in the mail, advertising it.\u00a0 Customers have asked me about it.
